Here is a list of homebirth midwives and birth centers by state. Keep in mind that most homebirth midwives will travel long distances to attend a birth, especially in rural areas. If you live close to a state border, or live in the East, be sure to check nearby towns in neighboring states as well.
If the midwife in your area does not have a website, I’ve discovered that local health food stores, La Leche groups, or wellness centers frequently have good information about who provides care in the area.
(Please note that I do not personally know or necessarily endorse every midwife. I have merely compiled a list in order to make finding one much easier for you. Also, if you know of a midwife who does not appear on this list, feel free to contact me with her website and I will add her.
In addition, it is difficult for one person to make sure all websites are still functional – though I do try to- so if a link leads somewhere it shouldn’t, please let me know so I can remove it or find the new site.)

Illinois
~~~
Certified Professional (homebirth) Midwives are not legally recognized in Illinois, and therefore in most counties must practice “underground”, with restricted access to lifesaving medical equipment that midwives in other states have. Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) are legal, but generally practice in hospital settings. The few CNMs listed below do offer homebirth.
For more information, visit the Coalition for Illinois Midwifery or Illinois Families for Midwifery. Some women near state borders are able to see a midwife in a neighboring state. For Illinois women who really want a homebirth, try finding one via word-of-mouth (try naturopaths, La Leche meetings, Homebirth Support Groups, etc), and get involved in trying to get women better access to high-quality maternity care in your state!
While home birth is not illegal in Nebraska, it is difficult to find a midwife due to legislative attacks on midwives. Homebirth Midwife in St Louis
Thanks! Gotcha up there. 🙂
Would you mind adding Firstlight Midwifery Care in WA. We serve Tacoma and surrounding areas. Our website is http://www.tacomabirth.com
Hi Sarah! Looks like your site is already up there. 🙂 Thanks for giving women safe options for birth!
Do you know of any other midwives in Delaware or Maryland?
Hi Stacey!
Unfortunately, it is difficult to find midwives in Maryland due to recent legislative attacks on home birth in the state. I’ve updated Maryland and Delaware with a few midwives who practice home birth. I also found email for two midwives in the general area, though I’m not sure exactly where they practice (susan.midwife@gmail.com & puffy@verizon.net). Apparently, many midwives in MD have gone underground, so the only way to find them is by word-of-mouth. If you don’t find someone you like here, I would try talking to mothers at La Leche meetings or at health food stores, etc. The midwives I’ve found may also be able to tell you of others close to you.
Hope this helps, have a great day!
~Beth
Have you heard that direct entry midwives are now legal in MD? Check out Birthwise Midwifery! ❤
What?!?! I hadn’t heard…that is great news!
Bethany,
Thank you. I’m not yet pregnant but know this is the route I want to go. I know I will find someone when the time is right 🙂 Thank you for your help.
You’re welcome! I love to “meet” women who know their options in birth, and know what they want up front! I’ll keep my eyes open for any more midwives in the area, and for any legal changes in MD.
Hi! I’m a tradtional midwife in Western PA. Merry Blessings Birth Service provides CBE, Breastfeeding support, Doula, Montirice and homebirth services throughout Western PA and Eastern Ohio. We’d love to be on your list!
Thank you! You’re on my list. 🙂
We are two CNMs in the West Georgia/Atlanta area offering home birth. We would love to be part of your list!
Thank you! I’ve added your practice. That’s great you have cooperation with a local hospital. There are not many doctors I’ve met or hospitals I’ve looked at that support birth at home and encourage collaboration between home birth midwives and doctors.
There are many midwives in Utah, is there a reason you don’t have any listed?
Hi! The only reason I haven’t listed any yet is due to time. I’ve been slowly working my way through the states, scouring the web for midwives and, if a state doesn’t have many, finding the reasons why. With three children at home under age 5 and another on the way, I’m slower to add midwives than I would like. But I do take requests into consideration, so maybe Utah will have to be next!
I appreciate you visiting and commenting! Are you a Utah midwife?
No problem :), didn’t realize it was an unfinished list. I know how that is since I have baby #3 on the way.
I had a baby in Utah and then worked as an apprentice with several midwives there and know many more.
This is a great list, thanks for putting it together!
Congrats on #3! I’m really glad you commented. Reading your comment helped me kick into gear, and make a goal of finishing the list before daughter #4 arrives this summer!
I would be thrilled if you would add my website under Massachusetts:
Midwife at Your Doorstep (formerly New Life Midwifery) http://www.midwifeatyourdoorstep.com – Boston area midwife, serving most of Massachusetts
Thank you Khadijah! I’ve added you 🙂
Thanks for a comprehensive list! It’s nice that moms have lots of good ways to find the care they are looking for. I am a home birth midwife in MN – and I would love to be added to your list please. My name is Jenny Hall, and my practice is New Birth Midwifery. http://www.newbirthmidwifery.com
Thanks again for putting this together.
Hi, can you add my midwife Janet Schwab? http://www.2eachherown.com/
She is the only homebirthing CNM in Denver who travels down to Colorado Springs. There are lots of military families in the Springs and the military insurance only covers CNM’s for homebirth. I searched long and hard for Janet and had a wonderful experience with her during my hubby’s deployment.
Also, we are moving to Delaware now. The first option in this list Woman Wise Midwifery says that their services exclude DE. 😦 The other option on the list is a birth center. I’m hoping for a homebirth there. Can anyone help?
Thank you!
Maybe this is why I can’t find a midwife in Delaware. Boo!! http://birthanarchy.com/oppressive-midwifery-laws-delaware#comment-2425
This is just so wrong. Why does anyone feel they have the right to tell me what kind of birth I am allowed to have?!
It’s awful to see how many states restrict midwifery. Thanks for letting me know about Delaware. I hope you can find a good midwife you can see after you move!
Hey! I just wanted to write an update. I had these lovely ladies for my birth last year. Just phenomenal service. We ended up moving to Maryland where direct entry midwives are now legal! Woohoo!
https://m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=882262295189319&tsid=0.4729556906968355&source=typeahead
Francie I am so glad you found such great midwives and had a positive experience! I can imagine that it was really difficult to move away from a midwife you trusted to live in a state that wasn’t home birth friendly. But that is super exciting about Maryland! I appreciate the update, and I will get those ladies up on my site tonight!
Thank you!!
Hi there. Would you please add my name to your list of California Midwives.
Lara Sodergren, Dar a Luz Midwifery, Sonoma/Marin County.
Thank you and thanks too for compiling such a comprehensive list of Midwives.
Hi, I’ve added you to the list. And I appreciate the thanks…when I was first learning about home birth, I had no idea where to even start looking for a midwife, so hopefully this helps someone!
Hi Sandra, I have added you. Since the link is to a Facebook account I also listed your number for the many mommas who don’t have an account. Thanks!
aye! Thank you! ~, and wishing you a very successful 2014 serving mothers, their families and midwives!
I love the list you have put together! Such a huge task and such a great helpful place for all those mommas searching for a local midwife.
I was wondering if you would consider mentioning us somewhere on your list as we are a small family owned birth supply company.
Sometimes it’s hard for people to find a place to get birth supplies from and we are here to make it easier for everyone.
We are an internet based store offering affordable birthing supplies and baby items to not only midwives but also to mommas in any state. We can also create a custom kit for any midwife who would like to provide an easy way for their clients to order everything they require their clients to have on hand for their home birth.
Thank you for sharing this list! I look forward to hearing from you!
If it’s not on the list, I haven’t found one. Just checked and added a link to one in central IA. Sorry! You could try the local phonebook for midwives who may not have websites.
What a great resource for people!! And I wanted to let you know about a new home birth practice that just opened up! Journey to Birth Midwifery (www.journeytobirthmidwifery.com) is now attending births in the lower Hudson Valley of NY. It would be great if you could add them to your list!
Thanks! Gotcha up there. I love seeing new midwifery practices start up.
Wow, that was fast! Thanks so much! Unfortunately the link doesn’t seem to be working though.
http://www.homebirthmidwiferycare.com
My midwife is great but I saw they weren’t listed. It is the Katy birth center in Katy Texas.
Thank you! I’ve added the Katy Birth Center to Texas.
Hello! Please add San Francisco doula Barbara Smoak to this list if you would be so kind. http://celebratebirth.com
Hi Barbara, thanks for commenting. Unfortunately, my list is limited to home birth midwives or birth centers, to assist women in finding a safe way to birth outside a hospital. I chose not to include doulas, mainly due to the length of the page, although I think doulas are valuable assets during a birth. I looked at your site and it looks like you have some great services to offer the SF area. I will leave your comment up with the link so that if anyone in your area reads through the comments they will find your website.
Thank you Bethany. I understand and appreciate it all the same.
I know of a great midwife in East Texas. Brenda Buffington her website is http://www.easttexasmidwife.com.
Can you add Brenda Buffington? She works in the East Texas area and her website is http://www.easttexasmidwife.com
Brenda is a popular midwife this week. 🙂 Thank you…I have added her website. I enjoyed reading her bio and think it’s great she’s been to The Farm twice! What an amazing experience it must have been.
Sorry they both where me but browser flaked out on me so I wasn’t sure that it sent the message the first time and I didn’t see anything saying it was awaiting moderation. The second comment worked it was supposed to. Thanks for adding her.
Can you add:
Im looking for a midwife in Illinois that will assist in a vbac at home. Im in SW suburbs of Chicago. Thanks for your help.
Hi, there are three nurse-midwives listed in the state, or you could contact one of the midwifery advocate organizations that are listed above. If neither option works, since you live close enough to both Ohio and Wisconsin, you may be able to find a midwife who has a home-type place in a neighboring state where you can give birth. I do know of a couple midwives in other places who have that option available when clients can’t give birth at home. I hope you find a midwife who works perfectly for you. So sorry I can’t be of more help!
How much do the midwives charge on average? It’s hard to find this information on the individual websites. I’m looking for one who could do it for 3000-4000 or there about, is that realistic?
Hi Christina, it really depends on your area. Somewhere between 3k and 5k has seemed to be about normal where I’ve lived, but I am not sure about other parts of the country. Most midwives I’ve spoken to offer payment plans, and a couple were willing to give a small discount if we paid everything up front. Hope you find a midwife who is perfect for you!
Another thought: Some insurance does cover midwifery care, and some midwives may be able to accept state insurance. Also, I personally know a midwife who is open to trade or partial payment/partial trade for items or services she needs when a client is short on cash. That scenario is probably more likely in a small community, but it may be worth asking about?
please add http://www.heartland-midwifery.com to my listing Heartland Midwifery in Ohio. Thank you!
Thank you! I’ve updated the link. Hope you’ve had a great weekend!
thank you, Bethany! been a quiet weekend so far. what a sweet photo that is!
Are there any updates on the Montana midwives? I’m looking for one closer to the northeastern corner. It’s really close to North Dakota, but they say it’s not legal for a North Dakota midwife to deliver in Montana. Thanks.
I haven’t heard from any in that part of the state, but I will double check and update the list if there are any new ones. Sorry that’s not more helpful!
Hi there, do you know any midwives near Williston North Dakota?
I have been looking, and will keep up the search, but check out http://www.mothering.com/forum/90-north-south-dakota-montana-wyoming/1325915-looking-hb-midwife-near-williston-nd.html on Mothering.com. It may be helpful. (Sorry for the long address. There’s a new admin format and I’m trying to figure it out)
Hi Jennifer! Yes, I found several midwives in the area. None are located directly in Lakewood, but many are close enough that they could deliver there. Also, Maven Midwife DOES deliver babies in Lakewood according to her website. I updated my Washington list so check out the links there. I hope you find your perfect midwife match!
please add alexandriamidwife.com – Licensed CPM serving Alexandria Virginia and surrounding Washington DC metro areas.
Great! Thank you!
The Midwives of NJ as well 🙂
I want to say thank you for all the time it took you to find all of these wonderful people and make the list, but some of the ones you have listed for Indiana are actually Iowa. I just thought I would let you know so you can put them in the right spot.
Thanks, Genny! I will look at that today!
I need a cheap midwife or obgyn near princeton indiana. I live in princeton, indiana and i might be around 5 months pregnant. Im working on insurance right now and I dont have a way to get anywhere. I cant find anyone that is cheap enough to help me with me only having a very low income job. Can anyone help me please!!!
Hi Brianne! Congratulations on your pregnancy! I’m not totally familiar with that area, but if you contact one of the midwives I listed, I’m sure she can direct you if she isn’t close enough or charges too much.
Check for a midwife who takes CHP as well. I knew of one years ago when I lived in Denver, but am not sure of other states.
Due to the unexpected surprise of #3.. I am on the lookout for a Midwife, OB, Birth Center, or facility that offers water birthing in or very close to the Ashland, KY area. I am getting discouraged as I had medicated births with my last two children over 6yrs ago.. and with this being my last.. would LOVE to have the birth I have always dreamed of.. But after hours of searching.. I am beginning to think this won’t happen.
Also forgot to mention I could also make the 15min drive to Huntington, WV if we needed to! We live in the TriState area..
I have no idea if this group is good or not, but here is a possibility http://www.familycarewv.org/providers/
http://www.familycarewv.org/womens-services/
Congrats on your surprise! I don’t know the KY area very well, but if the listed midwives aren’t what you need, maybe try contacting the Kentucky Home Birth Coalition to see if they have any suggestions? Best of luck to you!
hey everyone! I am desperately trying to find a midwife in central alabama. I live in tuscaloosa and have had terrible experiences in hospital births (this is number 4!) I really need help finding someone. Unfortunately, because licensing laws just recently changed to allow midwives here, those practicing tend to stay under the radar and are thus hard to find. This is something I TRULY want. Please help me!!! I have called everyone i can find on my own. No luck.
Thanks!
Suzanne
Hi Suzanne! I’m sorry it’s been difficult for you to find! The Alabama Midwives Alliance has some midwives listed, but I’m assuming you probably called all of them. I would personally try to find crunchy mom groups for the area (Facebook tends to have them, and mothering.com forums have good info threads sometimes). I’m hoping another local mother can give you some direction!
Thanks for the ideas! Any suggestions on search terms for the Facebook groups?
I would try variations of your city, county, or area name along with “natural moms”, “crunchy mamas”, “attachment parenting”, “natural parenting”, etc., and any combination of those. If you type “Tuscaloosa natural”, a list of suggestions may come up. You could also search doulas to see if a natural birth group comes up. 🙂 Hope you can find something!
Hi the link for Bozeman midwives without websites is broken. Can you please fix or email me the list!? Also there is The Birth Center in addition to The Birth Place. Both have websites. Thank you!
Hi Alia! Thank you for commenting! I have updated the link, but it looks like the number of midwives listed on it has shrunk. I also added another home birth midwife in Bozeman, and am looking for more. 🙂
Hi Bethany,
Thank you for the reply! We ended up choosing Stacey Haugland at The Birth Place. She was fantastic, and we feel blessed she is in Bozeman. Highly recommend her 110%.
Thank you so much for the tips you shared us pregnant specially to those who are first timer in giving birth. This is good to know first what to do and what is not to,great job Bethany!
Pretty article and I love the information you shared. I love to see and read update of this article.
